So I was getting into The Twelves a while back, and heard their joyous remix of Two Door Cinema Club‘s Something Good Can Work. Months ago I learnt that Two Door were playing London in June, I booked a ticket without even thinking – not realising that in real life they were perhaps a little more guitar heavy than The Twelves made them out to be…
…nevermind! It’s June, and they’re here!
Here’s that Twelves remix that just makes me want to move my body in happy, poppy, geeky little circles…
Now, we arrived in the absolutely packed main chamber of the Academy literally 3 minutes before the band came on stage, which was excellent timing. Apparently, earlier the crowd had gotten a bit rowdy and torn down some essential element of Two Door’s stage show, so everyone missed out on that. Boo.
What we did get was a little over an hour of poptastic-rock-love. These guys have been touring their first album, Tourist History, for the last year, and I suspect they played every single track on the night – not bad, given the entire CD only lasts 32:19 – and it’s their only album to date!
For a few of the numbers the bass guitar was swapped out for a keyboard, providing the necessary electronic rhythms, and what was left of the lightshow was nice and sparkly. Loads of punters knew all the words (again, perhaps not so hard to do given you’ve only got 30 minutes of material to work with!), and there was definitely an above average amount of dancing going on.
I did notice the security people having a minor heart attack at one point when Sam (Halliday, lead singer) told the crowd to get on each other’s shoulders, in strict defiance of “The Rules”. It was so good to see such a huge number of people lifting their mates onto their shoulders and bouncing and swaying along to the happy tunes.
Two Door Cinema Club @ O2 Academy, Brixton: Small, but perfectly formed. A great night out.
